The video shares the many stories told by teens who have battled mental illness and how they used the arts as a form of an expressive outlet to cope with the struggles of everyday life. These expressive outlets range from visual arts, performing arts, poetry, song writing, etc.
“Self care is what people do for themselves to establish and maintain health, and to prevent and deal with illness” (Geneva, 1998). Self care is a broad concept that includes any intentional actions people take to care for their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. What these students are managing is self help through the arts. Self care can be very simple and doesn’t have to involve lots of time or resources – it’s about creatively figuring out what helps YOU to maintain your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. |

Art Appreciation Can Improve Personal Morale
Botton Is very passionate in his belief that Art appreciation can give equal therapeutic benefits as physically expressing creativity by applying paint on paper. The arts nourish the imagination and develop a sense of beauty, while providing unique ways for students to gain insights into the world around them. Students gain insights into the human condition through ongoing exposure to works of art (The Ontario Curriculum, The Arts, 2010). Art appreciation is still exposing a creative outlet for student expression. They tend to gravitate to styles and works that best defines their current situation emotionally or the complete opposite as an escape.
